Who Are We?
Shena S. Smith, Founder and CEO
I began this organization in July of 2014 in response to a burden on my heart for teenage girls whose zeal for life, vision, and direction had dissipated. As a teacher for over 9 years, I have witnessed countless girls who have been greatly impacted as a result of poor self efficacy, misguided decision making, and toxic relationships. As a late bloomer to fully receiving Christ in my life, the loss of my beloved father in 2011 positioned me to gain a deeper enlightenment of who I am in Christ and what I am purposed to create. Through this intimacy, God unveiled His purposes and plans for me - thus enabling me to flourish and prosper in an intentional and substantial way. Hence, the idea of daughters uniting was birthed  as a means to connect girls through the power of unity, diversity, and love. Therefore, I established an environment for teenage girls to learn who they are in Christ, propel them to live out their God given purpose, and develop a legacy state of mind.

Shannon A. Scates, Board of Director

I joined Daughters United in Christ, as a Board member in 2015. My life has been transformed by the realization of who I am in Christ. This all began when I joined a ministry for young women, not too different from Daughters United in Christ. As an artist, I have a passion to use my creative abilities to help others know their worth and discover who they are according to what God has to say about them. I hope to instill in these teenage girls the power they have as daughters of the Most High.

Marsheda Ewulomi, Board of Director
I graduated with Distinction from the University of Michigan in 2012 for the completion of an interdisciplinary Senior Thesis through the Department of African and Afroamerican Studies. There, I majored in English and minored in African American Studies and upon graduating, I pursued a career in education by entering a fiercely competitive program called Teach for America.
As a Teach For America Corp Member, I taught secondary English for two years in the Metro DC area. In the process of teaching, I mentored, coached dance, and organized different school events--some that grossed over $2500. Being in a public school classroom and witnessing the limiting conditions in which parents, students, teachers and administrators work  reaffirmed my passion for the law. I am currently pursuing my Juris Doctorate at Northwestern University School of Law with a particular interest in the intersection of art, culture, law, and social policy.

I was mentored by the founder of Daughters United in Christ, Inc. and I am truly inspired by Shena Smith's work. I could not help but support the organization, for it creates a safe space for daughters in Christ to grow into Proverbs 31 women.
